IBHS reports that most insurers in Alabama sell a FORTIFIED endorsement, which adds money toward the FORTIFIED upgrade when a covered loss replaces the roof.
Steps and traps
How it works here
- Pass a FORTIFIED evaluation of the home; the evaluator's fee is paid by the owner and varies by evaluator.
- Collect three bids from program contractors. The award amount is shown only after all three bids are in.
- The contractor does the work under a contract with you, not with the state.
- After IBHS issues the designation, the program pays the contractor up to the amount in your award letter.
Watch for
- The grant may not cover the whole job; anything above $10,000 is yours.
- Grants open in rounds when funded. The program page announced a round for Jefferson, Tuscaloosa and Escambia counties on November 4, 2025.
