How PickARoofer writes what it publishes, where the numbers come from, and how the site pays for itself.

How the money works

PickARoofer earns money by selling homeowner requests (leads) to roofing contractors. Each request goes to one contractor. Contractors do not pay to be listed in the directory, and they do not pay for a Verified badge. The badge comes from a license check against an official registry, nothing else.

That business model gives us a reason to want homeowners to request quotes, and you should read our pages with that in mind. Some articles compare lead models, including how our exclusive leads differ from shared leads. Those articles are about our own product, and we treat them as such.

How we write

  • Research articles are built from data we hold: the contractor database, NOAA hail and storm reports, and the cost figures described on Data & Methodology. The method and the period are stated in the article.
  • Guides and how-to articles explain a process, such as filing an insurance claim or reading an estimate. They summarize how the process usually works and point to the official source where one exists. They are not legal, insurance or engineering advice, and your policy, your state and your contractor's contract decide what applies to you.
  • Every article carries a byline and a date. Our editor is Kate G., co-founder, and articles she edits say so.
  • Where an article cites an outside source, the link appears in the article's Sources list at the bottom.
  • We do not write reviews, ratings or testimonials, and we do not show review counts we cannot trace to a source. If we have no data for a number, we leave it out.

Where our data comes from

  • Hail and storm events: reports from NOAA, including the Storm Events database and the Storm Prediction Center's storm reports. These are public-domain records. The hail data feed shows the recent reports we use. A report is a spotter observation, not an insurance finding.
  • Contractor licenses: official state and industry registries. How verification works lists each registry and what the badge does and does not confirm.
  • Contractor listings: public business records. A listing is not an endorsement.
  • Roofing costs: the base rates and local adjustments explained on Data & Methodology. They are ranges for planning, not quotes.

Corrections

If you find a wrong number, an outdated rule or a listing error, write to us and say which page and what is wrong. We check the claim against the source. When it is right, we fix the page and update its date. When we disagree, we say why.
