We Analyzed 4,630 Roofers Across 174 US Cities — Here's What We Found

We run a roofing contractor directory. That means we have something most homeowners don't: a database with ratings, review counts, and location data for thousands of roofers across the country. We decided to actually use it.

Here's what 4,630 verified roofing contractors across 174 US cities look like when you put them in a spreadsheet.

The Numbers First

• 4,630 contractors analyzed, all active on Google Maps
• 174 cities across 20+ states
• Average rating: 4.76 stars out of 5.0
• Average review count: 48 reviews per contractor
• Rating range: 1.0 to 5.0 (yes, someone has a 1-star roofing company)

The 4.76 average is higher than you might expect. Roofing is a reputation-driven business — a bad job means a bad roof, and people notice. Contractors who survive long enough to accumulate 40+ reviews tend to be the ones who actually show up and do the work.

Which States Have the Best Roofers?

When ranked by average contractor rating, these five states come out on top:

Idaho's high average makes sense: smaller market, fewer contractors, and the ones operating there tend to be established businesses with loyal customer bases. Colorado's hail season creates high demand — and contractors who can't handle it don't last long enough to accumulate reviews.

The Cities Where Roofers Earn the Highest Ratings

At the city level, the results are more interesting. The top five cities by average contractor rating:

Norman and Edmond, Oklahoma — two cities in the same metro area — both appear in the top three. Oklahoma is tornado country: contractors who operate here deal with insurance adjusters, severe weather repairs, and homeowners who need work done fast. The weak ones don't make it.

Franklin, Tennessee is a different story. It's one of the wealthiest suburbs in the US, with median home values well above the national average. High-value homes, high-end clients, and contractors who compete hard for reputation.

What a 4.76 Average Actually Means

The national average of 4.76 stars across 4,630 contractors is artificially high, and intentionally so. This dataset only includes contractors active on Google Maps — businesses that have claimed their listing and are responding to reviews. Ghost contractors and fly-by-night operations don't show up here.

That said, there's still meaningful spread:

• Contractors with below 4.0 stars: avoid. With 4,630 options across 174 cities, there's no reason to use a 3.8-star roofer.
• Contractors with 4.5–4.7 stars and 50+ reviews: solid choice. Enough real reviews to filter out paid ones.
• Contractors with 4.9+ stars but under 10 reviews: treat with caution. Nine friends can produce nine 5-star reviews.
• Contractors with 4.8+ stars and 100+ reviews: genuinely exceptional. That's hard to fake at scale.

The Review Count Problem

The average contractor in our dataset has 48 reviews. But the distribution is heavily skewed. Some contractors have 400+ reviews; many have fewer than 10. When choosing a roofer, the number of reviews matters as much as the star rating.

A contractor with 4.9 stars and 8 reviews is statistically unreliable. A contractor with 4.7 stars and 150 reviews has been vetted by 150 real customers. Take the second one.

How We Collected This Data

All data was collected from Google Maps listings for roofing contractors in each city. We included only active businesses with at least one Google review. Ratings and review counts reflect the state of listings as of June 2026.

We did not pay for placement or accept submissions to influence rankings. The contractors listed on PickARoofer are the contractors with the highest-rated contractors by Google Maps rating in each city.
