It means one specific thing: we matched the contractor against an official public licensing registry and found an active roofing license. It does not confirm insurance, and it is not an endorsement. State-by-State Licensing Requirements
Roofing contractor licensing in the United States is not federally standardized. Each state sets its own rules, and within states, some authority is delegated to cities and counties. That is why the same badge points to a different registry from one state to the next, and why the profile says whether the record is a license or a registration.
Texas
Texas has no statewide roofing contractor license. The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT) runs an industry licensing program with an exam, experience and annual education. It is not a government registry. For Texas contractors, the badge means we confirmed the contractor's RCAT license against the RCAT registry. The Texas Department of Insurance is the state resource for insurance claim and storm-repair guidance, but we do not use it to verify contractors.
Oklahoma
Roofing contractors in Oklahoma register with the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board (CIB), which keeps a public licensee search. Our Oklahoma check matches the contractor's name and location against that registry and records the number, status and expiration date exactly as the CIB reports them. An expired, revoked or unmatched record does not get the badge.
Arkansas
Arkansas contractors are licensed or registered by the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board (ACLB). Its home improvement license applies to specialty work on a single-family residence when the project is more than $2,000. Residential roofers are registered rather than licensed, and each profile says which one it is, because they are not the same claim. Homeowners can run the same lookup on the ACLB contractor search.
Kansas
Kansas has no statewide roofing license. Requirements are handled at the city and county level, with permit rules varying across the state's 105 counties. Because there is no state registry to check against, Kansas is not among the states where our Verified badge is live. A Kansas contractor without a badge is not a mark against them; it only means we have not confirmed a license, because there is none to confirm. Ask for permits and proof of insurance directly.
Insurance Is a Separate Question
In no state does the Verified badge confirm general liability or workers' compensation insurance. Where a contractor has separately provided a current Certificate of Insurance, we note it on the profile as "Insurance on file." Even then, ask any roofer for a current certificate yourself before signing, and call the insurer to confirm the policy is active.
Verification Status Is Not Permanent
We record the license number, its status and its expiration date as the registry reports them on the day we check. A license in good standing in January can lapse by June, so a badge reflects the registry record at the time of the most recent check. Every verified profile links back to the public registry so a homeowner can look at the same record we did.

The list is on How Verification Works and covers Florida, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi, Illinois, Minnesota, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. Verification is rolling out state by state.
Why does a contractor have no badge?
Most listed contractors are not verified yet. The absence of a badge only means we have not completed confirmation for that state. Ask for the license number and check it yourself with the state board.
Why should a homeowner care about contractor licensing?
A licensed contractor has met the legal threshold the state sets for operating in the trade. When problems arise after a repair, a licensed contractor is reachable through the state licensing board's complaint process, which is not available when dealing with an unlicensed crew.
