Roofing in Jacksonville: local conditions

Duval County's NOAA record shows more wind than hail. From 2014 to June 2026 it logged 82 hail reports, 22 days with hail of 1 inch or larger in 2014-2025 (about 2 a year), and 4 days at 1.75 inches or larger. The largest stone was 2.75 inches at Jacksonville Beach on May 31, 2017, and May is the busiest hail month with 24 of the 82 reports. Wind is the larger exposure: thunderstorm-wind reports number 364, with gusts of 58 mph or more on 107 days against 22 days of 1-inch hail, and the strongest report is 81 mph at Gilmore on November 17, 2014 (an estimated gust; NOAA's measured maximum that day was 79 mph at Cosmo). The county has 12 tornadoes on file, the strongest rated EF1. These counts cover hail, thunderstorm-wind and tornado reports only, not tropical-storm or hurricane wind. NASA POWER grid data for 2014-2023 averages 51.5 inches of rain and 83 days at 90 F or higher a year.

Jacksonville is a consolidated city-county; the city had 949,611 residents in the 2020 Census. The Census Bureau's 2019-2023 survey puts the city's median year built at 1986, with 40.6% of the city's housing units built before 1980 and 57.4% of occupied units owner-occupied. Florida licenses roofers in two ways: a certified contractor holds a state certificate of competency and may work in any jurisdiction, while a registered contractor is registered only where it met the local competency rules (F.S. 489.105). Under F.S. 553.844, a roof replacement must include a secondary water barrier and techniques to strengthen the roof-deck attachment, so ask each quote to list both. If a roof built or replaced under the 2007 Florida Building Code or later has 25 percent or more repaired or replaced, only the repaired portion must meet the current code, and a local government cannot change that rule by ordinance. Notice of a storm claim is due within one year of the date of loss, or 18 months for a supplemental claim (F.S. 627.70132).
