What Fort Worth's climate means for emergency roof repair

  • After tornado-force wind in Fort Worth, treat any exposed decking as urgent — overnight rain into an open roof multiplies the loss tenfold.
  • A severe Fort Worth hail event can puncture a roof outright; if you see daylight or active dripping, emergency patching can't wait on an insurance timeline.

Emergency Roof Repair in Fort Worth: questions

When is hail season in Fort Worth?
April is the worst month: 33% of the 541 hail reports NOAA holds for the county came then. Reports run from March to June. Book the inspection before March, while crews still have open dates.
How big does hail get near Fort Worth?
The largest hail NOAA logged near Fort Worth measured 5 inches, about the size of a softball. Hail of an inch or more fell on 83 days in the same record. The biggest day was June 12, 2023, with 10 reports. The National Weather Service calls hail of 1 inch or larger severe; the bigger the stone, the more likely it is to crack a shingle.
How many roofing companies work around Fort Worth?
The Census Bureau counts 261 roofing companies with payroll in Tarrant County, employing about 1,881 people. 76.2% of them have fewer than five employees, so most quotes come from owner-run crews. A roofer's median pay is $46,030 a year (BLS).
How long does a Texas insurer have to answer a roof claim?
Texas sets time limits in writing. For example, the insurer must acknowledge your claim, start the investigation, and ask you for the papers it needs within 15 days (Tex. Ins. Code §542.055). The full list and a date calculator are on our Texas claim-deadlines page: pickaroofer.com/claim-deadlines/tx.
How old are the homes in Fort Worth, and does it matter for the roof?
The median home in Fort Worth was built in 1992, and 34.9% of homes date from before 1980 (Census ACS). A roof on a home that old has often been re-covered at least once, so ask the roofer whether there is a second layer underneath: it changes the tear-off cost. The area sees about 38 freeze-thaw days a year, which loosens flashing and sealant.
Do I need a permit for emergency roof repair in Texas?
Most Texas jurisdictions require a building permit for a re-roof or tear-off; minor repairs often do not. A reputable local contractor pulls the permit and schedules the inspection. Ask for the permit number before work starts.
