Roofing in Columbus: local conditions
Hail around Columbus follows two seasons: NOAA storm reports for Franklin County from 2014 to June 2026 total 97, and 34 of them fall in April and 24 in July, with only 4 from August to December combined (September 2, October 1, November 1). The largest stones on record are 1.75 inches, at Dublin on September 1, 2019 and Westerville on July 24, 2023. Wind is the other risk: on February 28, 2024 at least five tornadoes touched down in the county in one day, the strongest an EF2 near Blacklick, 2.92 miles long and 300 yards wide, and the strongest thunderstorm-wind report is a measured 75 mph gust at Mudsock on April 29, 2014. NASA POWER grid data for 2014-2023 averages 96 freeze-thaw days a year. Weather Service records back to 1878 show the swings roofs live with: 49.4 inches of snow in 2003, 55.18 inches of rain in 2018, and 21.60 inches in the driest year, 1930.
Columbus had 905,748 residents in the 2020 Census. Ohio has no state roofing license; the city licenses contractors itself under City Code Chapter 4114, and its Home Improvement Limited license lists residential roofing among its permitted scopes, based on board approval, so ask the roofer which Columbus license it holds. Replacing a roof needs a Roof, Siding, Windows, Doors permit, which comes with one inspection; structural changes to trusses or rafters need a different permit. Columbus does not let owners buy a permit for work they hire a contractor to perform, and every contractor must hold a City of Columbus license or registration before applying, so a roofer who asks you to pull the permit is a red flag. The city portal's contractor search (portal.columbus.gov/permits) lists record number, licensee, type and status, not a license number. In the Census Bureau's 2019-2023 survey the city's median year built is 1980, 50.6% of its housing units were built before 1980, and 44.3% of occupied units are owner-occupied.
