Washington sets its insurer clocks through Washington Administrative Code, chapter 284-30 WAC (WAC 284-30-360, 284-30-370 and 284-30-380), Office of the Insurance Commissioner. Insurers in Washington get 10 working days to acknowledge (WAC 284-30-360(1)); Washington allows 15 working days to decide (WAC 284-30-380(1)). 4 Washington limits follow.

Business days skip Saturdays and Sundays only; public holidays are not subtracted, so a real deadline can be a day or two later.

What we could not confirm in Washington

  • Nothing in the Washington statutes or rules we read puts a number of days on reporting a property loss to your insurer; that period is written in your policy. Official page.
  • RCW 48.18.200(1)(c) bars a property policy from limiting suit to less than one year from the date of loss. It sets a minimum floor, not a statewide deadline; the period that applies to your claim is in your policy and Washington law, so ask an attorney. Official page.
A change is coming. WSR 26-17-089 (filed 2026-08-18) replaces these sections effective 2026-10-18: acknowledgment becomes 10 business days (WAC 284-30-360(1)); the accept-or-deny answer becomes due within 30 calendar days after notification of the claim, no longer counted from proofs of loss (WAC 284-30-380(1)); the investigation limit becomes 30 calendar days with written updates every 30 days (WAC 284-30-370(1)); the heads-up notice becomes 30 calendar days before a limit (WAC 284-30-380(5)).
Not legal advice. These Washington standards bind insurers, not policyholders. The one number that touches you is in RCW 48.18.200: a property policy may not cut your right to sue below one year from the date of loss, and the actual period is in your policy. The rules shown here are replaced on 2026-10-18 (see the notice above). Information, not legal advice. Complaints in Washington start with the Washington Office of the Insurance Commissioner.
