What to Do Next
- Do a ground-level walk-around first. Granule piles at downspouts, dented gutters or screens, and shredded plant leaves are ground-level signs that the roof took a hit. Stay off the roof itself.
- Photograph anything suspicious with date stamps. This NOAA log plus dated photos connect the damage to a covered storm event — insurers exclude "gradual wear" but cover sudden storm damage.
- Get a free inspection from a local roofer. Granule loss and bruised shingles are invisible from the ground; a written scope settles whether there is a claim at all.
- File on your policy's clock, not a salesman's. Your filing window comes from the policy itself — file promptly while the dates above are easy to document. Full walkthrough: roof insurance claim guide.
